Kroger History

Kroger is one of America’s biggest grocery retailers. It has grown from being a small store in Cincinnati to having close to 3,000 stores across the country. At least half of the number of Kroger stores has pharmacies that offer Kroger flu shots.

In 1883, Barney Kroger founded his first store at East Pearl Street in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.  The following year, he bought out his partner and then opened another store.

At the turn of the new century, Kroger became the first grocery to have its own bakeries.  In 1902, the Kroger Grocery and Baking Company was incorporated with 40 stores and annual sales reaching $1.75 million.

When it marked its 25th anniversary, the chain had 136 stores in Cincinnati as well as nearby areas of Dayton, Columbus and the northern part of Kentucky.

Kroger Growth and Development

Mergers have been a factor in the growth of Kroger through the years. One hundred years after it was founded, it merged with Dillon Companies based in Kansas making it a bigger force in the food, drug, and convenience store business in both coasts.

Its biggest merger came more than 15 years later when it merged with Fred Meyer, Inc. in a landmark $13 billion deal that established a supermarket chain with a broad geographic coverage.

Kroger used to own and operate the drug store chain SupeRx. In 1985, it beat Rite Aid for the acquisition of the Hook’s Drug Stores chain headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. This allowed Kroger to combine it with SupeRX, spinning it to Hook’s SupeRx.

However, the company decided to sell its SupeRx stores to Revco and put up its own drug-store business. Today, Kroger has more than 2,000 pharmacies most of which are located inside its supermarkets. Its pharmacies fill more than 160 prescriptions annually.

Kroger Achievements

Kroger has been able to remain relevant in the business by constantly innovating. In 1972, it became the first retailer in the country to have an electric scanner. Most recently, it introduced a faster checkout system that lessened the time customers had to wait in line for checking out. Today, it only takes less than 30 seconds for customers to check out in Kroger stores thanks to the said system.

It was also the first retailer to have a consumer research when it interviewed close to 4,000 customers in the ‘70s. Through the inputs from its consumers, Kroger was able to introduce modern stores that featured specialty shops, deli/bakeries, flower shops, amongst other trends.

By 2012, Kroger had surveyed close to 2 million customers who have provided the firm with valuable feedback and insights that have helped it improve its operations.

Kroger was also one of the first to have an open dating system that assured its customers of fresh perishables.

It also has one of the biggest truck fleets in the U.S., with its trucks moving thousands of items to various warehouses and plants across the country.

Kroger Flu Shot Information

Kroger flu shots are offered in all Kroger pharmacies. Flu shots are administered by certified pharmacists. In case you are wondering about Kroger flu shot cost, don’t worry as it is very affordable. Kroger accepts Medicare and some other insurance plans, so you won’t have to pay for the shots if your insurance is accepted by Kroger.

The Kroger pharmacies are also offering Fluzone HD for patients who are 65 years and older.  Fluzone HD has four times more antigen compared to the regular flu vaccine. A higher dose of antigen gives older people a better immune response and protection against flu. This is particularly needed by older people whose immune systems are weaker compared to those younger than them.

You don’t have to make an appointment to have your flu shot at a Kroger pharmacy. However, it would be wise to check first with the Kroger pharmacy near you about its hours of operation so you can drop by when the pharmacy is open.

The easiest way to find a Kroger pharmacy near you is to go online and visit its official website, www.kroger.com.

You would need to enter your ZIP code or the city you are in. The browser will display a list of Kroger stores in your area. Check if the Kroger store nearest you has a pharmacy, and then contact the store by dialing the phone number shown on the store details section.

Kroger pharmacy also offers on-site flu vaccination clinics for businesses.
